Isabel Bacon is a cut-out paper collage artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY and Amagansett, NY.
Isabel makes cut-out images of the things she sees and likes in the world around her. Her material is largely informed by her observations of the street and beach, and also references a nostalgia for the past. Isabel's perceptions are informed by a “hi/lo” appreciation of society.
In her work, she likes to both recreate the contemporary reality of daily life, while also drawing upon familiar images and feelings of the "good old days.” Isabel’s images are such that the ordinary viewer should know and recognize the subject in the absence of context.
In life and in art, Isabel is a problem-solver. Working with paper, glue and scissors can have its limitations in regard to color and perspective, among other things. In this way, she sees the medium as a challenge to convey movement, body and expression with an otherwise flat plane.
As an artist, Isabel steers clear of taking herself seriously. Through her cutouts, she merely expresses the characters and situations of our shared lives to the extent that they are recognizable, but also humorous and undeniable.
